Read P2004 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P2004 says the intake manifold runner flaps on bank 1 are stuck open. Many engines use movable flaps to lengthen or shorten the intake path - long and narrow for torque at low speed, short and open for power at high speed - and a flap stuck open removes the low-speed benefit.

Carbon is almost always why. Crankcase vapour and, on direct injection engines, the absence of fuel washing over the ports let deposits build on the flap shafts until they seize. Cleaning works when caught early; on some designs the flaps and their linkage are part of the manifold and are not sold separately.

Repair options and cost

Intake runner cleaning$200 - $600
Runner control actuator$250 - $700
Intake manifold$500 - $1,400

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

Owner reports mentioning P2004

Exited side street onto main 4 lane main road with a median. Upon pulling out wrench light appeared causing all power to engine to cease, oncoming traffic almost hit me. Upon limping into median I shut vehicle off and turned back on. Wrench light was gone, check engine light was there. Code P2112, P2004, P2009.2014 Ford F-150 · Jul 2026
The warnings shown in the attached picture came on for no reason all at once then after a restart of the engine, they all disappeared except the check engine light. OBDII code reader shows the code P2004, but after clearing the code with the OBDII tool, the check engine light doesn't come back, which should mean the problem P2004 does not exist anymore. The same story has happened several times in the past year.2016 Nissan Rogue · Sep 2023
Driving uphill when the car suddenly jolted, lost power, and all warning lights became illuminated. All safety features were disabled as well. The sudden stop almost resulted in being rear ended and the car was barely drivable afterwards. I have a 2026 nissan rogue and was driving on the interstate. Thought I got bad gas because I could push the accelerator and not go any faster. My check engine light came on and I had it tested. It is showing p2004 intake manifold runner control stuck open bank 1. I know some nissan's have a recall on this but not my VIN number. Was wondering if this is a issue with other people and if would be a recall at some point.2016 Nissan Rogue · Aug 2020 · 87,000 mi

Every time it rains and I drive the vehicle at stop light or a any complete stop. Engine starts stalling. Then cuts off. This issue has gone for about 4 months only when it rains. Check engine comes on with code p2004( manifold runner bank 1 stuck open.) I have replaced the whole manifold with new parts I bought from dodge dealer. Check engine light doesn't go away after trying to delete code. I was told that I had to go to dodge dealer to get it reprogram which will cost me. Should have to pay to get reprogram if I exchange parts on the car. *tr2008 Dodge Avenger · Oct 2013 · 80,104 mi
