Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Slightly worse fuel economy
  • Emissions test failure

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Small exhaust leak between the converter and the rear sensor
  2. Rear oxygen sensor drifting
  3. Catalytic converter beginning to fail
  4. Engine running lean overall

Read P2096 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P2096 means the fine fuel trim the computer applies based on the rear oxygen sensor has run to its lean limit. Modern engines use the post-catalyst sensor for slow, small corrections on top of the main fuel control, and this code says those corrections ran out of room.

A pinhole exhaust leak between the converter and that sensor is the classic cause: outside air drawn in makes the exhaust look permanently lean at that point. Because it takes very little to trigger this, the leak is often too small to hear and needs a smoke test or a careful inspection of the flange gaskets.

Repair options and cost

Exhaust leak repair$150 - $600
Downstream oxygen sensor$150 - $400
Catalytic converter$900 - $2,500

Coolant & engine oil is going somewhere. I have to check everyday to make sure coolant & oil is in. Check engine light started flashing & car jerking back. Diagnostic codes:P1326 & P20962013 Hyundai Sonata · Sep 2023
My check engine light came on. We took it to a mechanic who hooked it up to the computer. It read DTC p2096. When the mechanic looked it up, he noticed that there was a recall issued previously on this specific problem. The description said Target EF feedback system to lean- manual and automatic transmission. When plugging in my VIN number it said it was not affected. But my question is if I'm having the same problem and it affected the same year that my vehicle was made, why is my vehicle not on that recall list?2010 Mazda MAZDA5 · Mar 2023

Honda has a known issue with its emissions. A warranty extension Service Bulletin 22-002 has been issued to replace fuel injectors up to 10 yrs 150,000 miles but they do not identify other malfunctioning components that also need replacement. My vehicle has the MIL with codes P0420 and P2096 for the past year. I had the fuel injectors replaced and O2 sensor replaced in August of 2022 but the MIL continues to report the same codes. Next I am being told to replace the catalytic convertor which should also be covered under warranty but is not. I have a Honda Pilot 2016 Elite 101,000 miles.2016 Honda Pilot · Jul 2022
