What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P2097 is the rich-side limit of the same post-catalyst trim. Where P2096 usually means air is getting in, this one usually means fuel is - either the engine is genuinely running rich or the rear sensor has drifted.
It often arrives alongside a catalyst efficiency code, and the order matters: a converter that has stopped storing oxygen properly will set both. Diagnosing the fuel mixture first is still correct, because fitting a converter to an engine that is running rich guarantees the new one fails too.
