Read P2097 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P2097 is the rich-side limit of the same post-catalyst trim. Where P2096 usually means air is getting in, this one usually means fuel is - either the engine is genuinely running rich or the rear sensor has drifted.

It often arrives alongside a catalyst efficiency code, and the order matters: a converter that has stopped storing oxygen properly will set both. Diagnosing the fuel mixture first is still correct, because fitting a converter to an engine that is running rich guarantees the new one fails too.

Repair options and cost

Downstream oxygen sensor$150 - $400
Catalytic converter$900 - $2,500
Fuel system diagnosis$120 - $300

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

Exhaust bracket broke, created a hole in pipe, which then resulted in cracked catalytic converter. Dealership and GM denied repairs due to the hole being on the "wrong pipe" but the same bracket that is covered broke resulting in the consequential damage. Check engine light came on, loud exhaust noise. Threw codes P219A, P2097, P0171. Bulletin even outlines that broken bracket/hole can cause cracks in converter, still denied. This is a known issue with the welding on this pipe/bracket, why they didn't extend the coverage to BOTH pipes is beyond me.2019 Chevrolet Traverse · Apr 2026
While driving 60 MPH on the highway my car started stuttering then lost all power. It threw 3 codes P0131, P2097 and P0171. I have spent over $1,000.00 and a month later they tell me it was my intake bolts that were loose. They replaced every part PCV valve, MAF sensor, O2 sensor and car still wouldn't run right. PLEASE address this issue as that is UNSAFE for a car to just stop on the highway.2014 Chevrolet Malibu · Mar 2024 · 167,611 mi
Code p2097 (post catalyst fuel trim system too rich bank 1) kept popping up I went to a aaa certified shop and they ran tons of tests on the car and they found that this code is common on chevy malibu's, chevy came out with a guide to try and fix the code but doesn't guarantee it fixes the problem I got car fully inspected (fuel pressure, fuel ratio, mass air ratio etc) and got both oxygen sensors replaced and crankcase breather hose replaced about 5 miles after I leave the shop check engine light came back on and it's the same code. Chevy needs to address this common problem so many people are having2013 Chevrolet Malibu · Oct 2020 · 119,000 mi

New car. 500 miles on motor. Check engine light came on. P2097. Noticed decreased engine power when pressing gas peddle. Car stalled on start. Felt slight shimmy from motor while sitting idle.2019 Chevrolet Malibu · Sep 2019 · 493 mi
Vehicle has had a hard shift since 15000 miles, always told at dealership it was normal. At 87493 my check engine light came on and code P2097-00- I was told it was that I had a bad battery and GM would not provide me one. Light was reset. Now at 98000 miles, shifting harder (automatic) like a jolt and vibrates going up hill- told I needed transmission fluid changed, this did nothing. This was confirmed by dealership prior to fluid change and then the dealership would not set up another appointment. Had this confirmed also by an independent service center. Occasionally a light will come on to say shift into park, despite being in park. No other messages related to this.2019 GMC Acadia · Jun 2019
I purchased the 2017 malibu in 2017 and currently have about 24000 miles on it. In the past three months (since december 2018) my check engine light has turned on and been serviced for the code p2097: post catalyst fuel trim system high limit. I was told after the first visit to the dealership that it was a software problem that needed updating. However, it should not be turning on every few hundred miles. The light turns on after highway travel. My specific malibu also needed the hydraulic valve lash adjusters replaced due to the exhaust valves not sealing, this was supposedly corrected in december as well.2017 Chevrolet Malibu · Mar 2019
