What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0717 reports no signal at all from the input shaft speed sensor. Without knowing input speed the computer cannot calculate gear ratios, so it takes the safe route and locks the transmission into a single gear.
The important distinction is between a sensor that cannot see the shaft and a shaft that genuinely is not turning as expected. If the car drives in limp mode but otherwise behaves, the sensor or its wiring is the likely cause; if there is slipping or noise alongside the code, the transmission itself needs attention before parts are thrown at it.
