P0715: Input/Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor A Circuit
A generic powertrain (engine and transmission) trouble code, same meaning on every brand.
Moderately - expect rough shifting; avoid long trips until diagnosed.
Symptoms
- Harsh or erratic shifts
- Speedometer issues on some cars
- Transmission holding gears too long
Likely causes, most common first
- Input speed sensor failed
- Wiring or connector at the transmission
- Debris on the sensor's tone ring
Read P0715 yourself before paying for diagnosis
A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.
What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0715 means the transmission lost its input shaft speed signal - half of the data it needs to compute gear ratios and time shifts. The computer falls back to crude shift logic, which you feel immediately.
Many input sensors are external bolt-ons and modest repairs; some hide inside the case and cost real labor. Metallic debris found on the sensor tip is a separate warning worth heeding.
Repair options and cost
Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.
Owner reports mentioning P0715
“While driving, the transmission sticks or will not shift. A wrench flashes and has only produced a check engine light one time. Code P0715 - Irregular signal coming from the input/turbine speed sensor in transmission. If it does shift, it is hard and jerks the vehicle. This has only happened a few times while driving but I found a Ford TSB for earlier models (2011-2013) having the same issue.”2016 Ford F-150 · May 2022
“My truck will show a wrench light on the dash and downshift from 6th gear to 1st gear while driving causing the tires to lock up(70mph on the highway). This is a huge safety issues as I almost wrecked when it has done this. The 2011 to 2013 f-150s had a recall for this same issue but there is no recall for the 2016's. Truck shows code p0715.”2016 Ford F-150 · Jan 2021 · 110,000 mi
“The engine light popped on and then the car wouldn't accelerate the odometer didn't pass 0mph you have to repeatedly restart the car to even get the car to 20 mph. When going up a hill the car wouldn't go fast enough so I started to roll back. Got the car scanned and the things that popped up was p0744, p285a, p0715”2016 Nissan Sentra · Jan 2021

“W driving at all different speeds the transmission will jump. The little wrench light will come on the code is p0715. Tss sensor. The rpms will go up once this happens and the light is on, at this point there is no power and I was almost hit by a truck while all my family was in car. If I stop and turn the car off the light will reset its self. This is a very dangerous thing. My whole family could have been killed. Ford knows this is a very common thing in this transmission. It should be recalled before someone gets killed”2008 Ford Taurus X · Jul 2016 · 165,000 mi
“I do not write in unless but my problem is fails with code p0715 transmission and reverse cam sensor I change speed sensor transmission and the problem remains to uncover the pcm control to check the continuity I met you, as you have water intrusion as well as green particles around a pin input .characteristics of water in combination with voltage, there are resistances under 10000 homs addition of several pins that relation with solenoid of transxale. *tr”2005 Ford Freestar · Dec 2011 · 52,000 mi
