P0106: Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
A generic powertrain (engine and transmission) trouble code, same meaning on every brand.
Driveable with reduced smoothness; diagnose within days - fueling accuracy depends on this sensor.
Symptoms
- Rough or surging idle
- Hesitation on acceleration
- Black smoke or poor economy
Likely causes, most common first
- Vacuum leak at or near the MAP sensor hose
- MAP sensor drifting out of range
- Wiring or connector damage
- Serious engine breathing problem (clogged cat, valve timing)
Read P0106 yourself before paying for diagnosis
A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.
What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0106 means the manifold pressure sensor's signal does not agree with what throttle position and rpm say it should be. The MAP sensor measures engine load; on many engines it is the primary input for fuel calculation.
Check the small vacuum hose to the sensor first - cracked or oil-soaked hoses cause a large share of these codes. If the hose is sound, compare the sensor's key-on reading to barometric pressure with a scan tool; a healthy sensor reads local atmospheric pressure with the engine off.
Repair options and cost
Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

“This has been an issue slowly getting worse over the last few months and escalated this week. June 20th, 2025 my car has literary died over (4) times during traffic and I had to try and stay calm while using a code reader to clear the codes to get the engine to start. Very scary, I have a 2017 Giulia Ti that just hit 100k miles. Even took it to the dealership and they couldn't explain it. Parasitic draw on my battery and they gave it a pass :( Codes: P2510-ECM/PCM POWER RELAY SENSE CKT RANGE/PERFORMANCE P0103-VAF CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT P0100- VAF CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION P0451-EVAP SYSTEM PRESSURE SENSOR/SWITCH 'A' RANGE/PERFORMANCE P0106-MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE/BAROMETRIC PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT”2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia · Jun 2025

“My vehicle stalls and chugs. This happens while I'm driving and stationary.ford did have a recall for a map sensor manifold issue back in october of 2014 for ford escapes with this description . The code is p0106 . I am struggling to get help for any dealer because there is no longer an open recall for this issue. I could be driving and my car shuts off. “I'm having issues with a p0106 code. It continuously comes off and on. I have had the manifold absolute pressure sensor replaced, I have had the intake cleaned and relatable parts. The check engine light will come on at random times, and will just go away on it's own. I have read that multiple people have had to update the ecm which has then fixed the issue. I don't believe this should be an expense to the owner of the vehicle for an update that should have been done in the first place.”2014 Volkswagen Golf · Aug 2020 · 127,000 mi
