Read P0101 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0101 means the mass airflow sensor's signal is implausible - out of the range the computer expects for current conditions. The MAF is the engine's primary measure of how much air enters; when it drifts, fueling drifts with it.

MAF cleaner spray is the cheapest diagnostic in the book: clean the element, and a large fraction of P0101s never return. Inspect the rubber intake boot while there - cracks that open under engine torque are invisible at rest and classic causes of this code.

Repair options and cost

MAF cleaning$20 - $120
Intake boot replacement$80 - $300
MAF sensor$200 - $450

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

Owner reports mentioning P0101

My vehicle over the last 3-4 years has been showing P0101 code errors, resulting in issues with idle, performance, and fuel economy. Cleaning the MAF sensor does nothing. This causes all sensors to turn off and stay off until the car is subsequently turned off again. I have taken it in to Nissan to be inspected and refuse to pay over $500 just for them to diagnose the issue. Have seen this also being a recurring issue with other owners.2020 Nissan Kicks · Jul 2026
Check engine light appears on and throws code p0101, mass air flow sensor. Have changed mass air flow sensor twice, had code cleared at mechanic. Drive 5 miles and BAM check engine light appears. As soon as my car hits 2000 RPM, the front and rear collision lights and traction light come on... my car almost doesn't move when I press the gas to go after this happens and the rpm's are up to 3000-4000 just going 30 mph2020 Nissan Kicks · Jun 2026
After Nissan dealership updated ECM on 6/1/2026, the MIL came on with code p0101. This causes the car to go into limo mode while driving on the highway. I took car back to Nissan who said they needed to clean the wires, which they did and cleared the code. Again while driving the car went into limo mode. Nissan now says I needed an $8,000 new computer. Again the car went into limo mode while driving. The car can be driven but randomly goes into limo mode. This only happened immediately after the ECM update in June 2026, and may cause an accident if it continues to randomly go into limo mode.2014 Nissan Sentra · Jun 2026

Immediately after turning car on and putting it on Drive gear, the collision light and traction light on dashboard came on and a message "Malfunction See Owner's Manual" came on too. As I tried to get out of my parking garage it was little hard to accelerate. I turned my car off for a few seconds, the collision/traction engine light turned off, but check engine light turned on. I had battery checked by AAA who confirmed battery is still in good condition. Took vehicle to auto zone to scan and was notified about got code "P0101" Air filter is changed with every oil change, maintenance has been kept up as well.2021 Nissan Kicks · Apr 2026
I am constantly getting a malfunction for P0101 despite changing my air flow system. It creates acceleration problems everytime.2020 Nissan Versa · Apr 2026
When put in park car started idling rough and then stalled. Engine light, collision warning light, and traction control light came on. Code scanned as a P0101 code.2018 Nissan Kicks · Mar 2026
The p0101 code has been going on and off of this car since purchase (3 years) the MAF sensor has been replaced twice and the check engine light comes back on after just a few days each time. This poses a safety risk because the car stops at stop lights and turns off, the car shakes at idle, the car refuses to accelerate risking pulling out in front of another car without being able to accelerate. The check engine light comes on and off and the traction control light as well, its so random and the only fix is to "change the sensor" which does not fix it because it happens again immediately after. Its dangerous and needs an actual fix.2018 Nissan Kicks · Jan 2026
Getting code p0101. When car first starts the throttle response is very low. Once the car warms up to seems to go away but it appears to be a consistent problem. Others are reporting as well for this vehicle.2018 Nissan Kicks · Dec 2025
