What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0103 means the air flow signal is reading higher than is physically possible for the engine speed and throttle opening. The computer responds by adding fuel to match the airflow it is being told about, which is why a rich-running complaint usually arrives with this code.
Compare the sensor's live reading against a rule of thumb: at idle a healthy engine draws roughly two to seven grams of air per second depending on size, and near four or five grams per litre of displacement at 2500 rpm. A reading far above that with the engine idling calmly points squarely at the sensor or its wiring.

“Complainant owns a 2003 volkswagen gti 1.8t. Driving home three days ago, check engine light comes on and car starts to stagger and putter. Weird clicking noise.
