Symptoms

  • Black smoke or fuel smell
  • Rough idle
  • Surging under light throttle

Likely causes, most common first

  1. MAF sensor failing high
  2. Signal wire shorted to voltage
  3. Contaminated sensing element
  4. Aftermarket intake flowing more air than the sensor expects

Read P0103 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0103 means the air flow signal is reading higher than is physically possible for the engine speed and throttle opening. The computer responds by adding fuel to match the airflow it is being told about, which is why a rich-running complaint usually arrives with this code.

Compare the sensor's live reading against a rule of thumb: at idle a healthy engine draws roughly two to seven grams of air per second depending on size, and near four or five grams per litre of displacement at 2500 rpm. A reading far above that with the engine idling calmly points squarely at the sensor or its wiring.

Owner reports mentioning P0103

This has been an issue slowly getting worse over the last few months and escalated this week. June 20th, 2025 my car has literary died over (4) times during traffic and I had to try and stay calm while using a code reader to clear the codes to get the engine to start. Very scary, I have a 2017 Giulia Ti that just hit 100k miles. Even took it to the dealership and they couldn't explain it. Parasitic draw on my battery and they gave it a pass :( Codes: P2510-ECM/PCM POWER RELAY SENSE CKT RANGE/PERFORMANCE P0103-VAF CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT P0100- VAF CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION P0451-EVAP SYSTEM PRESSURE SENSOR/SWITCH 'A' RANGE/PERFORMANCE P0106-MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE/BAROMETRIC PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia · Jun 2025

Parked car immediately, ran diag got code p0103 which indicates cylinder misfire. Checked internet and came up with many many other complaining of the same problem and stating that it is a know problem with this model of vw. Called mechanic, he confirmed. Car delivered to mechanic who reconfirmed. Paid $500 for repair. If this is a known problem, why does vw not recall? *tr2003 Volkswagen GTI · Apr 2009 · 57,600 mi
