Symptoms

  • Slightly rough cold start
  • Small drop in fuel economy
  • Check engine light with no felt symptom

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Intake air temperature sensor drifting out of range
  2. Sensor contaminated with oil from the crankcase vent
  3. Poor connection at the sensor
  4. Sensor reading heat-soaked air after shutdown

Read P0111 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0111 is a rationality code rather than a circuit failure: the intake air temperature reading is inside its electrical range but does not agree with the other temperature data the computer has. A common trigger is an intake temperature that stays far away from coolant temperature after an overnight soak, when the two should be nearly equal.

On many engines the intake temperature sensor is built into the mass air flow sensor, so an oily film from the crankcase ventilation system slows both readings at once. Cleaning is worth trying before replacement, and if the MAF and IAT complaints appear together the combined part is the likely answer.
