Most “most reliable cars” lists quietly cheat: without sales figures, a car with few complaints may simply have few owners. We refuse to fake that ranking. Instead, here is what 1,507,156 federal complaint records can honestly prove: the models that never produced a single lemon year, the recent cars that pair clean complaint records with 5-star crash tests, and the best year to buy of every heavily documented model.

The no-lemon club: models that never had a year to avoid
Almost every long-running model has at least one year owners regret - a botched redesign, a bad transmission, a recall wave. These are the exceptions: models with 8+ comparable years and thousands of complaints on file where no single year ever crossed our lemon threshold. Buy any year - they are all about the same.
This measures consistency, not perfection - a steady model can still be an ordinary car. Notably, no Toyota or Honda qualifies: their occasional headline years broke the streak.

Solid picks: 5-star crash tests, clean complaint records
Two independent government signals at once: a 5-star overall NHTSA crash rating and a complaint rate at or below the model's own typical year. Model years 2015-2022 - old enough to have shown their problems, new enough to be worth buying. One best year per model.

Relative to the same model only - a quiet year of a troubled model is not safer than an average year of a solid one. A low-sales final production year can also look quieter than it was.

Among models with at least 8 comparable years and dense complaint data, Chevrolet Malibu, Ram 1500, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse, Chrysler Sebring, GMC Terrain, Cadillac Deville, GMC Envoy, Chevrolet Monte Carlo never produced a single year that crossed our lemon-year threshold - no year of theirs collected complaints 1.75x faster than the model's own median.
What is the most reliable used car of all time?
No complaint database can honestly answer that across brands: NHTSA publishes no sales figures, so a car with few complaints may simply have few owners. What the data can prove is which years of each model held up best, which models never spiked, and which recent cars pair clean complaint records with 5-star crash ratings - that is exactly what this page lists.
What is the best year of the Ford F-150?

Methodology
Why there is no “#1 most reliable car” here. Complaint counts can only be compared across models when adjusted for how many are on the road - and NHTSA publishes no sales data. A list that ranks models by raw complaint counts is ranking popularity, backwards. We compare each model only to itself and add independent signals (crash ratings) where cross-model claims are needed.
The no-lemon club. A model qualifies with at least 8 comparable years (3+ years old, age capped at 12 when computing rates), at least 2,000 total complaints (so the record is dense enough to trust), and no year whose complaints-per-year ran 1.75x the model's median with 50+ complaints - the exact threshold that marks “lemon” years across this site.
Solid picks. Model years 2015-2022 holding a 5-star overall NHTSA crash rating with a complaint rate at or below their model's median, at least 25 complaints on file, models with 5+ comparable years. One year per model, ranked by how far below the median it sits.
Best year by model. Among the 15 models with the most complaints on file (a proxy for how many are on the road), the year with at most half the model's median complaint rate - restricted to 2005 and newer with at least 50 complaints, because very old or final-production years look quiet mostly through low sales. Same core rule as the “solid year” badge on model pages.
Caveats. Complaints are owner self-reports, not verified defects; volume responds to media attention. Crash ratings measure crash protection, not mechanical reliability. Low complaint counts in first or last production years partly reflect low sales.
