U0151: Lost Communication With Restraints Control Module

A generic network and communication trouble code, same meaning on every brand.

Fix now, drive carefully

Yes - engine and brakes are unaffected. But the airbag computer is off the network, and the safe assumption is no airbags or pretensioners until it is back. Prompt repair.

  4. Failed airbag module

Read U0151 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

U0151 means the rest of the car stopped hearing from the restraints control module - the airbag computer went silent on the network. Whatever the cause, the practical consequence is the same as any airbag fault: the system cannot be trusted until communication returns.

The module typically lives under the center console or a front seat, bolted to the floor - prime territory for spilled drinks, wet carpet from a leaking windshield, and stray screws from aftermarket installs. A dead module often turns out to be a drowned module, and the carpet under it tells the story. The other classic is an install gone wrong: audio systems and remote starters spliced near the console can nick the module's power feed. Check history and simple supplies before pricing a new module, because modules also need coding to the car once replaced.

Repair options and cost

I have read several things about EBCM and the control power circuit being above threshold and wondering if this is a recall for this model? I am getting 3 error codes C0800, B1325, & U0151 for this vehicle. (General Motors is recalling over 449,000 SUVs and pickups (2023–2024 Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Suburban/Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and select Silverado/Sierra 1500) due to a software fault in the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) . This issue prevents the brake warning light from illuminating if brake fluid drops, increasing crash risk.) It's showing the same issues as above.2023 Chevrolet Traverse · Dec 2025
