What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
U0103 is the harder version of the shifter complaint: the gear shift control module went silent entirely - no data at all, valid or otherwise. On shift-by-wire cars the consequences are immediate and physical: the car cannot be asked for Reverse, Drive or Park through the normal control, and manufacturers vary widely in how gracefully they handle it.
Console shifters live directly under cupholders, which gives this code its most human cause: spilled coffee and soda wicking into the module's connector. Wet-carpet cars and detailing mishaps produce it too. The checks run the standard silent-module ladder - fuse, power, ground, then the network branch, then the module itself with coding to the car. Until then, the parking brake rule from U0404 applies doubled, and any trip where the selector already hesitated once should end at a shop, not a driveway.
