P2714: Pressure Control Solenoid D Performance/Stuck Off

A generic powertrain (engine and transmission) trouble code, same meaning on every brand.

Fix within weeks

Short distances - the classic presentation is sudden harsh shifting rather than slip, which is unpleasant but survivable. Sustained driving on a pressure fault, though, works the clutches hard.

Symptoms

  • Sudden firm or harsh shifts across gears
  • Check engine light with immediate character change
  • Clunks on light throttle shifts
  • Limp mode on some models

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Pressure control solenoid D stuck by varnish or debris
  2. Degraded fluid
  3. Valve body wear around the solenoid bore
  4. Internal leak in the controlled circuit

Read P2714 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P2714 is the hydraulic-performance twin of P2716: solenoid D answers electrically but the pressure it manages does not follow commands - stuck off, in the code's phrasing. On the Toyota and Lexus automatics where this family is famous, that solenoid trims line pressure, and its failure defaults the transmission to maximum pressure: every shift lands hard, all at once, often to the day the owner can name.

That harsh-default behavior is actually protective - high pressure prevents slip - but it hammers mounts and drivetrain while it lasts. Diagnosis runs the standard hydraulic ladder: fluid condition and level, then the solenoid (reachable in the pan on many units), then the valve body bore it lives in, which wears oval on high-mileage units and lets a healthy new solenoid keep misbehaving. A specialist's pressure test tells the bore's story before parts money is spent.

Repair options and cost

Transmission fluid and filter service$150 - $350
Solenoid replacement$200 - $600
Valve body removal labor where required$300 - $800

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

- started shutting shutting off at while in drive. - started having reduced power - started idiling high while driving - initially there was no codes - last night I drove, I put in drive gear but it was delayed so I had to keep moving from park to drive for it to full go into drive - the codes came P0325 P0505 P0507 P0700 P1101 P2714 After I was driving up an incline the car stopped moving forward and started reversing backwards. One other independent shop advised they were able to produce but couldn't figure out the problem because no code were shown at the time. There has been many people having the same issues I started off with and I found the forum to file a report .2019 Chevrolet Malibu · Nov 2025
Engine power reduced came on after I was driving from a patient's home. My car started driving very rough. I had to pull over because I was in danger of being hit from behind. I took my car to a mechanic and was diagnosed with the code DTC P2714. I looked online and there are a lot of people having this issue and being put in dangerous situations when we drive. Chevy knows about the issue and has not issued any recalls. Unfortunately for me my vehicle is past the limited warranty so now I have to save up money to get my transmission serviced. I'm never buying American again. I could've been really hurt when my engine cut off.2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer · Feb 2025
My 2021 Chevrolet express van with an 8L90 transmission has failed after only 80k miles, willing to have it inspected. Check engine codes show P0700 and P2714 on 02/08/25. No prior warning lamps. This product has put my safety at risk due to overheating and making the vehicle go into limp mode while on public roadways. The product is known to fail for trucks alike with the same transmission but has yet to be reported for the Chevrolet express. Has only been confirmed via OBDii scanner from parts shop.2021 Chevrolet Express · Feb 2025

Car Will stop moving forward or reverse randomly while driving. This plays a p2714 code with the check engine light. It is available for inspection if requested. This has happened while driving on the road. Vehicle stalls out and does not move which could cause severe accident and bodily injury. This issue seems to be a known issue among GM vehicles with the CT40 CVT transmissions. I do have a short video that can be provided. It shows a check engine light on the vehicle's in drive but will not move.2019 Chevrolet Malibu · Jul 2024
During driving, vehicle slips in/out/past 2nd gear (or no 2nd gear is available). No 6th gear available. Happens constantly in city or highway traffic. There is a manufacturer recall (dtc p2714) on other 2010 chevrolet of the same model as well as several others for this same issue but the manufacturer states that the recall does not cover my VIN.2010 Chevrolet Malibu · Sep 2019 · 55,000 mi
