P2111: Throttle Actuator A Control System - Stuck Open
A generic powertrain (engine and transmission) trouble code, same meaning on every brand.
Not far - a throttle plate that will not close means engine speed you do not fully control. The computer fights it with fuel cuts and limp mode; treat it as a tow-or-fix-today problem.
Symptoms
- High or hunting idle
- Reduced power warning
- Engine speed slow to drop between shifts
- Stalling when the computer cuts fuel to protect itself
Likely causes, most common first
- Carbon buildup wedging the throttle plate
- Worn or stripped gears inside the throttle body motor drive
- Broken throttle return spring
- Wiring or connector fault on the motor circuit
Read P2111 yourself before paying for diagnosis
A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.
What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P2111 means the computer commanded the electronic throttle toward closed and the position sensors reported the plate stayed open. Modern throttles have no cable - a small motor moves the plate, position sensors verify every move, and any disagreement between commanded and actual angle sets a code within a fraction of a second.
The humble cause is carbon: the plate seals against its bore with tiny clearance, and a ridge of soot at the closed position physically props it open. Cleaning is cheap - but on many cars the computer must relearn the throttle's closed position afterwards, and skipping the relearn produces a high idle that looks like the original complaint. If cleaning does not hold, the plastic drive gears inside the throttle body strip with age, and the unit is replaced as an assembly.
Repair options and cost
Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.
Owner reports mentioning P2111
“The car would not accelerate after leaving a light. I had just exited the freeway and the gas pedal would not respond and I was stuck in the middle of a 4 lane highway. A yellow warning wrench appeared on the dash and then a check engine light. The error code is P2111 stating the throttle body stuck open.”2015 Ford Explorer · Oct 2023
“Code p2111 Dealership said throttle body needs to be replaced. Vehicle has only 67,336 miles. Was driving and the warning on the dash appeared "service engine now." I lost the ability to accelerate. Coasted out of traffic with what little ability the vehicle had left. Would have caused an accident in heavier traffic. Vehicle was towed to Ford dealership where diagnosed. This same problem occurred on earlier years”2016 Ford Escape · Aug 2023
“Sudden loss of power and deceleration. This happens intermittently and sets a code P2111 every time. Can drive for days between incidents and never know when it will happen. Gives no warning just shuts down immediately. This is very dangerous and my wife almost got hit yesterday in traffic due to malfunction”2013 Lincoln MKS · Oct 2021

“My vehicle lost power. A wrench icon appeared on the dash. I was entering a gas station so the car was in motion and I was able to park. I looked it up and found out it was a throttle body failure.. I had it towed to a ford dealer. I didnt trust to drive it. Ford could not duplicate the issue but the code was retained.p2111. The issue was not covered under the recall which was disappointing. If it's a known issue it shouldnt matter the yr and VIN#. It's a dangerous issue. It was covered under my extended warranty luckily and was repaired.”2014 Ford Edge · Sep 2020 · 33,000 mi
“Our ford edge will intermittently loose power and drops to a rough idle, engine light comes on. This can happen at hwy speeds or accelerating from a stop. The error code given is p2111 tac system-actuator stuck open. I can turn the switch off then restart it and it might run okay for awhile or not. Throttle body is clean and all connectors seem to look good, no corrosion.”2014 Ford Edge · Jul 2020 · 56,850 mi
“This has happened on at least 6 occasions int he last week. Most recently I was traveling on a highway at approx. 50mph when the engine entered a default low power state and the check engine light illuminated. I was able to pull onto the shoulder and the car behind me was able to avoid a collision by slamming on their brakes. Additionally, the car consistently presents symptoms of rough idle, rough engine running at normal speeds, and a highly decreased fuel economy. After pulling the odbii codes and some research, this appears to be a known problem with the car's throttle body assembly. The odbii code is p2111.”2013 Ford Edge · Feb 2020 · 91,000 mi
“The car will "shut down" (wrench error light) at any time, anywhere, any speed. Very dangerous!!! Error code p2111 throttle body actuator stuck open. I have seen numerous posts on this. Ford really needs to fix this!!! I will no longer let my child drive this car. So unsafe!! It happened to me several times a day probably three times in the last week. The vehicle is in motion, highway, city, straight, turns, fast, slow.”2011 Ford Mustang · Aug 2019 · 108,000 mi
“Vehicle in motion on city streets and highways when vehicle began to stutter, not accelerate and stall then shut down. Check engine light comes on and goes off randomly throwing code p2111 for throttle body being stuck open. Happens intermittently without warning.”2016 Ford Fusion · Aug 2019 · 68,000 mi
“The wrench light came up on my car. It says it's the throttle control transmission. The car gave no sign or warning about this car throttle. The code coming up is p2111. I believe there was a investigation going on with my situation a few years ago. Is this a recall or something that can be fixed because of a recall?”2011 Ford Fusion · Jul 2019 · 109,019 mi
“Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. While driving approximately 75 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the vehicle went into limp mode. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who retrieved diagnostic trouble code: p2111 (throttle actuator control system stuck open). The vehicle was not repaired. Autonation ford marietta (located at 869 cobb pkwy se, marietta, ga 30060, (770) 674-6077) was infomred of the failure via phone. The manufacturer was notified.
