Symptoms

  • Check engine light, often right after refueling
  • Fuel odor near the car in some cases

  1. Gas cap left loose or missing after refueling (very common)
  2. Detached or split EVAP hose
  3. Stuck-open vent valve
  4. Cracked charcoal canister

Read P0455 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0455 is the large-leak version of the EVAP family: the system cannot hold vacuum at all, which usually means a big opening - classically, a gas cap that never got tightened. The code often appears the morning after a fill-up.

Check the cap, clear the code, and give it a week. Persistent P0455 with a good cap means a disconnected hose or failed valve; these are visible faults a technician finds quickly. A strong fuel smell alongside this code deserves prompt attention - liquid fuel leaks live in the same neighborhood.

Repair options and cost

Gas cap$10 - $40
Hose reattachment or replacement$60 - $250
Vent valve or canister$200 - $600

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

Purchased 2013 chrysler town and country in july of 2020 and it had a clean record, was a former carmax vehicle and my independent mechanic reviewed the vehicle and deemed it a good purchase. I have since cared for the vehicle and it has run well until recently several error codes came up. P0300, p0456, p0455, p0175. I took it to my mechanic and they said this could be a vehicle manufacturer issue. The codes say something about evp leak, misfire and system running too rich. This should be investigated to ensure a recall isn't necessary. Repairs are well over $1000 and not due to any pre existing issues.2013 Chrysler Town And Country · Apr 2021 · 89,000 mi
Check engine light came on and the performance of the vehicle is bad. Bad idle, weak engine, just the car is not performing properly. I used the scanner to see the code and I had more than one . P0171 p0505 p117b p0441 p0455 . Fuel/air mixture is lean . And I hear the fuel pump making that noise that indicates a bad fuel pump. It's when I put the key in I hear it loud enough and if I turn the key on it does it again. When I put it on p it revs and rpm goes up and then comes down, up again down again ... When stopped at a red light the car wants to move and rpm keeps shaking. *tr2018 Toyota Camry · Jun 2020

I just had my brakes serviced and my bushings changed, but my ABS light still comes on. Also when I go to brake the car starts to shake and I'm going the speed limit. The engine has a rough idle, and shuts off when at a complete stop and when the vehicle is in motion. I've had many things replaced on the vehicle, such as purge valve, gas cap. Charcoal canister and fuel tank. In the engine the spark plugs were changed as well as the coil packs and the fuel injectors. Along with the camshaft sensor. Still getting p0455 and po0014. Fuel vapors leaking from evap system causing check engine light to come on, code p0455. I took it to the dealership and the service rep informed me that the leak was from coming from gas tank. I was told to drive the car until check engine comes back on and then call the dealership so he could contact gm.2010 Chevrolet Corvette · Jan 2019 · 39,100 mi
I have had issues with a check engine light that lights up all the time on the car. It will also say "check fuel fill inlet" when I pump gas. The code reads p0455 which means the engine computer recognizes a large leak in the evaporative emission control system (evap). The vehicle's evap system is sealed, it's main purpose is to prevent gasoline vapors in the fuel tank from escaping into the atmosphere. I am not sure if one of the recalls pertains to this, but this is an ongoing problem for me. So much so, that I have stopped driving the car in fear for my safety and my family.2011 Ford Escape · Jan 2019
