Symptoms

  • Rough idle and hesitation
  • Often appears together with P0171 on V engines

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Shared cause with P0171 when both present: MAF sensor or fuel pressure
  2. Vacuum leak on the bank 2 side of the intake
  3. Intake manifold gasket leak near bank 2 runners

Read P0174 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0174 is bank 2 running lean - the V-engine counterpart of P0171. When both codes set together, skip bank-specific theories: the fault is upstream of the split, in metered air or fuel supply. When P0174 appears alone, hunt for a leak local to bank 2's side of the intake manifold.

Check long-term fuel trims at idle versus 2500 rpm before replacing anything; the pattern localizes the fault in minutes and prevents the most common wasted repair on this code - replacing oxygen sensors that are correctly reporting a real lean condition.

Repair options and cost

MAF sensor cleaning$20 - $120
Intake gasket replacement$200 - $700
Fuel pressure repair$300 - $1,000

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

Car stalls while idling. The rpm's and the battery gauge go up and down while driving on city streets and highway. It has also been warm and cold weather. The car will reduce speed on it's own while this is happening. The vehicle drives rough and the engine sounds harsh. When using remote to open locks, sometimes a door lock will not open on driver or passenger side. Also, interior lights sometimes don't shut off when supposed too. *tr2003 Ford Windstar · Dec 2012 · 105,000 mi
