P0019: Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 2 Sensor B
A generic powertrain (engine and transmission) trouble code, same meaning on every brand.
Cautiously and briefly - correlation faults mean timing hardware is drifting or sticking on bank 2. Confirm the cause before trusting the engine with a commute.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Rattle on cold start in chain-wear cases
- Rough running or reduced power
- Possible hard starting
Likely causes, most common first
- Timing chain stretch on bank 2
- Exhaust cam phaser stuck or worn
- Oil control solenoid restricted
- Tone wheel shifted on the cam
Read P0019 yourself before paying for diagnosis
A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.
What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0019 completes the correlation family: crankshaft versus the bank 2 exhaust camshaft (sensor B). The computer's geometry says that cam is no longer where the crank says it should be, and the suspects are the same trio as its siblings P0008 and P0018 - stretched chain, stuck phaser, or a lying tone wheel.
Because this is the exhaust cam, one addition joins the list: exhaust phasers on some engines default to a locked position with weak oil pressure and unlock late, throwing correlation codes mostly on cold starts. That version often yields to the cheap pass - correct oil, fresh filter, cleaned or replaced control solenoid - before any teardown. If correlation drifts steadily worse across all temperatures, the mechanical suspects take over, and the same economics apply as everywhere in this family: chains are expensive, but valves meeting pistons are an engine.

Owner reports mentioning P0019
“Brandâ'new 2026 Nissan Armada suffered catastrophic engine failure at under 5,000 miles. Fault codes P21A1, P0019, P0326, and P219C were identified by an ASE Master Technician. Technician warned of internal mechanical failure and a risk of fire or explosion. Vehicle became undriveable and was towed to the dealership. Technician instructed that the engine should not be started due to safety risk.”NHTSA complaint · Apr 2026
“On April 1st my vehicles engine started normally and upon leaving the neighborhood began to rough idle. Prior to this, no lights were on and the vehicle had just passed an inspection. The engine was shuddering and there was very little power and the vehicle had difficulty maintaining speed. The codes were read and came back with P0304, P0306, P0302, P0300 and P0019. The vehicle was towed to a shop because it was undrivable. The vehicle is currently in the shop and they are recommending an entire engine replacement.”2016 Kia Sedona · Apr 2025

“The car shut off while driving on the road multiple times. It would then start back up while still rolling on the highway. At lights it shutoff and I then had tobrestart it it did this all the way home. The engine light came on. Scanner says p0019 states it's the correlation n timing chain and cam sensor. Upon researching there are multiple cases of this happening with this in particular motor. Doing this while on the road is incredible unsafe and could have cause me to be in an accident.”2010 Chevrolet Traverse · Feb 2020 · 178,000 mi
“The check engine light came on showing codes p0018 and p0019, the vehicle will start to idle and the traction controls come on and the vehicle goes into safety mode not able to go above 30 miles/hour. Mechanic stated that it was indicating issues with timing belt, but that it was very common for this vehicle to have issues with timing belt tensioners going bad.”2012 Chevrolet Traverse · Jun 2019 · 115,000 mi
