Symptoms

  • Rattle from the timing cover
  • Hard starting
  • Rough running and reduced power

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Timing chain stretched or jumped a tooth
  2. Worn chain guides or tensioner
  3. Camshaft phaser failure
  4. Crank or cam sensor reading incorrectly

Read P0017 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0017 means the crankshaft and the bank 1 camshaft B are no longer in the relationship the computer expects. Unlike a sensor circuit code, this one usually reflects real mechanical drift: a chain that has stretched enough to shift valve timing by a measurable angle.

Treat it as an early warning rather than an inconvenience. Chains rarely snap without notice, but they do jump teeth, and on an interference engine a jumped chain bends valves. The cost gap between a chain service and a cylinder head rebuild is why this code earns a prompt appointment rather than a wait-and-see.

Repair options and cost

Cam or crank sensor$150 - $400
Timing chain, guides and tensioner$1,200 - $3,000
Camshaft phaser$700 - $1,800

Owner reports mentioning P0017

On June 15, 2026, my check engine light came on. On June 17, 2026, I took it to Auto Zone, they checked the code for the check engine light, and it indicated P0016 and P0017–crankshaft issues. On June 19, 2026, while driving down the highway, my vehicle failed to accelerate. I exited the highway, and my vehicle completely decelerated and ultimately shut down. I was unable to get my engine running and had to get it towed to the dealer. It has been at the dealer for 3 weeks now. The dealer said my engine will likely need to be replaced. It is a 2023 Kia Telluride with less than 66,000 miles on it.2023 Kia Telluride · Jun 2026
Engine stalled at stoplight. Was able to restart and pulled into closest parking lot where it began idling hard. Check Engine light turned on. Checked oil and it was bone dry (no signs of oil leak/burning beforehand). After adding about a quart of oil, while in park I revved the engine slowly, but it would stall out if it went over 3000 rpms and idle even harder. My basic code reader popped for P0014 and P0017 (crankshaft/camshaft position). Had to have it towed to the local dealer for safety. 75,400 miles on it and my VIN has not been part of recalls. Requesting an investigation to include more VINs as these issues point to a prior recall resulting in engine replacement.2021 Kia Seltos · Mar 2026
On [XXX], check engine light came on with P1327 (PNSS piston noise detection). History includes SC209 recall in 2021 (inspection passed, PNSS software added Feb 2022). Now at 94,000 miles with misfire P0304 on cyl 4 and timing correlation P0017-dealer refuses full engine replacement under recall. Service dealer insisted it would be safe to drive 300 miles to Billings, MT from my home base location. Got 5 miles down the road to be left stranded to walk back with no service on a 13 degree day. I bought this car 1 1/2 yr ago.. Thursday I was driving down the road no warning lights no sounds, it stalled.. I got it home by a friend towing it, and when I went to try to start it, I then had the check engine light come on, and it threw 3 codes.. P0017, P0089, P228D. I was told that the ecm was replaced but after researching this there has been multiple sites stating others are having same issue.. and some stating that their problem was fixed but it broke down again every time.
