What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0017 means the crankshaft and the bank 1 camshaft B are no longer in the relationship the computer expects. Unlike a sensor circuit code, this one usually reflects real mechanical drift: a chain that has stretched enough to shift valve timing by a measurable angle.

Treat it as an early warning rather than an inconvenience. Chains rarely snap without notice, but they do jump teeth, and on an interference engine a jumped chain bends valves. The cost gap between a chain service and a cylinder head rebuild is why this code earns a prompt appointment rather than a wait-and-see.

“Engine stalled at stoplight. Was able to restart and pulled into closest parking lot where it began idling hard. Check Engine light turned on. Checked oil and it was bone dry (no signs of oil leak/burning beforehand). After adding about a quart of oil, while in park I revved the engine slowly, but it would stall out if it went over 3000 rpms and idle even harder. My basic code reader popped for P0014 and P0017 (crankshaft/camshaft position). Had to have it towed to the local dealer for safety. 75,400 miles on it and my VIN has not been part of recalls. “The contact owns a 2020 Kia Soul. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed. Additionally, the engine was leaking oil. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V259000 (Engine); however, the failure recurred. The contact's friend diagnosed the vehicle with a code reader and retrieved DTC: P0017, P0301, P0302, P0303, and P0304. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. “I bought this car 1 1/2 yr ago.. Thursday I was driving down the road no warning lights no sounds, it stalled..
