Symptoms

  • Fuel gauge erratic, stuck or jumping
  • Low-fuel light misbehaving

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Fuel level sender worn (resistive track wear)
  2. Float damaged or saturated
  3. Wiring to the pump module

Read P0463 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0463 means the fuel level signal is out of range - the float-and-resistor mechanism inside the tank has worn a dead spot or failed outright. The gauge follows the same faulty signal, which is the real-world problem here.

The sender usually comes with or attaches to the fuel pump module; if the pump has age on it, doing both in one labor bill is honest economy.

Repair options and cost

Fuel level sender$200 - $600
Wiring repair$80 - $250

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

Owner reports mentioning P0463

Check Engine light came on with a code P0463. This indicates that the fuel level sensor is bad. This is a VERY common issue on these trucks. It causes the vehicle to no longer go into "ECO" mode which is wasting fuel. This happens every time I fill the gas tank and does not go away until the tank reaches 3/4 tank. The part is garbage and is known to fail.2014 Ram 1500 · Aug 2025
Fuel sensor issues. 100's of complaints on Fuel Sensors and many reported to NHTSA. The gas gauge will not work and check engine light on, when checking code it is P0463,that is fuel sensor issue. It is dangerous not to know how much fuel is in tank. Again very common issue on Rams with 40K miles and less. Ram know about all these cases. It is a common problem that is ignored by Ram.2017 Ram 1500 · Nov 2024
The fuel gauge in my vehicle is not functioning correctly. It is showing that my fuel level is very low/empty even with a full tank of gas. I took it to the repair shop and the it had the codes P0452 for the fuel tank pressure sensor circuit and P0463 for the fuel level sensor. The repair shop replaced the fuel pump module which did not fix the problem. They suggested it appears to have an ECM issue. This exact problem is a recall on the 2014 Chevy Traverse however my vehicle is not included in this recall.2014 Chevrolet Traverse · Sep 2024

I had about 3/4 of a tank of gas. I noticed my fuel gauge go down to empty, and the low fuel light started blinking. It then when back up to about 3/4. It did this a couple of times until it stayed on empty, and the check engine light came on. The next time I started my truck, I got a "Fuel Sensor Fail" notification. I get that every time I start up. When I filled my tank, the gauge began to work again, but I still had a check engine light. I checked my codes, and had a P0463 code, which indicates a fuel sensor fail. I cleared the code, and the gauge worked for about a day and half. When I got to about 3/4 of a tank of gas again, it all happened again. I have about 78,000 miles.2016 Ram 1500 · Jan 2024
Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit - P0463. Yes, available for inspection. The Fuel level sensor cuts out and stops reporting fuel levels. This can lead to running out of gas on the highway or other dangerous situations that put the driver and others at risk. Also, the computer monitors stop reporting, therefore other aspects of the vehicle are compromised when the fuel level sensor stops working. The dealer confirms this is a common problem on this vehicle. Yes the vehicle was inspected by the dealer. My trucks fuel gauge sensor is reading empty even though I have a full tank. Code p0463 . It is from a faulty part/ float on the fuel pump. This is a huge problem in many ram 1500 models and needs to be recalled. Truck stalled and thankfully restarted. I was backing out of a parking spot when this occurred. The dealership knows the issues in the rams but wants me to pay for this safety issue. Have others reported this issue?2017 Ram 1500 · Jan 2021 · 53,200 mi

Error code p0463: fuel level sensor circuit high input, this means my fuel gauge is experiencing failures and I can not accurately determine how much fuel is in the vehicle. Doing a quick google search, this appears to be a very common issue with the 2014 ram 1500 5.7l. I'm at roughly 68500 mile on my truck so the issue is also out of warranty.2014 Ram 1500 · Jan 2020 · 68,500 mi
With 49,377 miles, I added partial fuel (6.9 gallons) and the fuel gauge showed zero with the fuel light on. After a few days the fuel gauge read normally. Since then I've added fuel five more times. Each time the gauge went to zero and then ramped up gradually. Yesterday, february 29, the check engine light came on steady. Today I had the error code read: p0463 fuel level sensor a circuit high input. Although the part required lists for $79.99, it is apparently changed in the fuel tank and very expensive to access.2008 Hyundai Santa FE · Dec 2019 · 49,377 mi
