What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0461 means the level signal is electrically alive but does not change the way it should - the tank was filled and the reading barely moved. A float arm mechanically stuck, or a resistance track worn bald exactly where the float spends most of its life, produces this.
The wear pattern is worth understanding because it explains the classic symptom: senders wear most at the level the tank most often sits at. A commuter who refuels at a quarter tank for years wears a dead spot there, and the gauge sails through the top half normally then sticks at the familiar spot. That history points firmly at the sender rather than the wiring.

“Have experienced this failure on my current 2007 xterra im at 53,000 miles and they refuse to repair it. Warranty on this item is 36,000 miles. They even tried to bs me when I said there is even a service bulletin out for this common repair. This is how it went: me - is there a current recall or service bulletin for a fuel sending unit failure or dtc p0461/2/3 dealer - let me check sir.
