Symptoms

  • Pinging or knocking on acceleration
  • Rough idle just after the code sets in some designs
  • Failed emissions test (NOx)

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Carbon-clogged EGR passages (dominant cause)
  2. EGR valve stuck closed or lazy
  3. Failed EGR vacuum solenoid or position sensor

Read P0401 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0401 means exhaust gas recirculation flow is below expectations - the system that tames combustion temperatures is not delivering. Carbon buildup in the EGR passages is the overwhelming cause; the valve itself is often fine behind clogged plumbing.

Cleaning passages is unglamorous labor but frequently the honest fix; a new valve bolted to blocked passages changes nothing. Elevated combustion temperatures from no-EGR operation invite detonation, so persistent pinging with this code should not be ignored all summer.

Repair options and cost

EGR passage cleaning$100 - $400
EGR valve replacement$250 - $700

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

My EGR system caused a check engine light. P0401 This is an extremely well documented issue on Gen2 Volts, especially 2017 models. Simply searching "EGR" on the Volt subreddit or forums returns hundreds of related threads. This issue can lead to a clogged EGR valve, causing further damage. A temporary resolution is unplugging the EGR valve, which i have not yet done. But this leaves the CEL illuminated, and without daily scanner, I wouls not know if other issues arise, causing a significant safety hazard.2017 Chevrolet Volt · Oct 2025
I have a Kia Niro Hybrid. I had the check engine light come on. I took it to Kia dealership in Cicero, NY (Driver's Village/ Burdick Kia. Upon inspection, the dealership stated the following: "CONFIRM CUSTOMER CONCERN CEL ON, P0401 EGR INSUFFICIENT FLOW EGR PORT BECOMES CLOGGED AT HIGH MILEAGE, EGR REPLACEMENT WOULD CORRECT LIGHT TEMPORARILY HOWEVER CASUAL CONDITION WILL STILL REMAIN, CLOG IN EGR FROM ENGINE ITSELF. LONG BLOCK REPLACEMENT MAY BE NEEDED FOR FULL CORRECTION OF CONDITION"2019 Kia Niro · Jan 2025
Received the vehicle on 8/6/24 with 96,500 miles on it. On 8/15/25 I received a check engine light with error code P0401 indicating an issue with the EGR Valve. I took the vehicle to my dealership which confirmed the issue and was informed that it was a common failure with this type of vehicle. I was placed on a waitlist for the part which as of today, 9/9/24, still is not available. A quick Google search shows that that this error is extremely common for these vehicles.2017 Chevrolet Volt · Aug 2024

Several incidents when accelerating, the engine goes into a limp mode, followed by indicator lights coming on P0401, P0299, P226C. The vehicle will not accelerate and travels at a max speed of about 5mph. This has happened in traffic every time and has put me and my family, as well as other vehicles, at extreme risk of being in an accident, not being able to accelerate out of the way of oncoming traffic. After several cycles of turning the vehicle off and on, it returns to normal function. The vehicle has been inspected at a Dodge Service station. They determined that the Turbo diesel system is malfunctioning and needs repair. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request.2015 Ram Promaster · Aug 2021
Egr and egr cooler failed at 21,000 miles. Dealer fixed under warranty 3/22/16. Same parts have failed again at 46,000 miles and is out of warranty. Searching the web shows this is a common repeat failure for the 6.7 diesel and costs $2,000 for repair. Engine trouble code is p0401. The parts or design must be defective as they only last for about 20,000 miles.2013 Ford F-250 SD · Jul 2019 · 46,000 mi
Check engine light came on and the code was p0106 and p0401. I discovered plastic tubing failed by breaking (disintegrating really), all in the vicinity of a part that I suspect controls those functions. The part is a harness with 4 of these plastic tubes that connect to various places. The fact that they are disintegrating indicates the wrong materials are used. Ford motor company should have this issue addressed as a recall for defective materials. I have samples of the tubing that survived.2010 Ford Explorer · Mar 2017 · 90,000 mi
