P0340: Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Bank 1 or Single Sensor
A generic powertrain (engine and transmission) trouble code, same meaning on every brand.
Same caution as P0335 - stall and no-start risk make this a prompt repair.
Symptoms
- Hard starting or no-start
- Stalling, rough running in fallback mode
Likely causes, most common first
- Camshaft position sensor failure
- Wiring or connector issues
- Timing chain stretch moving the cam signal (with P0016)
Read P0340 yourself before paying for diagnosis
A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.
What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0340 covers the camshaft position sensor circuit, which tells the computer which cylinder is on which stroke. Many engines can limp on the crank signal alone once running, but starting becomes unreliable.
If P0340 arrives together with correlation codes like P0016, suspect the timing chain rather than the sensor - the sensor may be accurately reporting a cam that really has moved. Alone, it is usually just an aging sensor, a modest fix.
Repair options and cost
Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.
