Symptoms

  • Intermittent stalling
  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Tachometer dropping to zero while driving

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Crankshaft position sensor failing when hot
  2. Reluctor ring damaged or with debris on its teeth
  3. Wiring or shield fault
  4. Sensor gap wrong after a repair

Read P0336 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0336 means the crankshaft position signal is present but irregular - pulses missing, extra, or spaced wrongly. The crank sensor is what tells the computer when to fire each cylinder, so a signal it cannot trust is a genuine roadside risk rather than an inconvenience.

Heat is the classic trigger. A sensor that works cold and drops out once the engine bay is hot produces exactly this pattern, and a car that stalls after twenty minutes and restarts once it cools is describing the fault out loud. Metal debris stuck to the reluctor ring produces the same irregular pattern and is worth a look before the sensor is blamed.

Repair options and cost

Crankshaft position sensor$150 - $450
Wiring repair$80 - $250
Reluctor ring repair$600 - $1,800

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

The magnetic material on the tone wheel detached causing a crank position sensor error code (P0336) and subsequent misfire while accelerating into traffic. The software had been updated per recall W58 (NHSTA 20V-475). Vehicle could be restarted but lacked full power. The vehicle is out of warranty, however, Stellantis directed that a dealer make repairs, customer pays out of pocket ($3200), and claim be submitted for reimbursement. Stellantis promptly denied the claim, despite correspondence in writing and recorded customer service phone call. A BBB complaint has been filed against Stellantis.2014 Ram 1500 · Dec 2025

My vehicle's malfunction light came on and it began to lose power off and on going down the turnpike. Since then, it sometimes won't start even though it sounds like it is going to. It continues to have these problems intermittently. When a diagnostic tool was hooked up to it, it brought up the following codes: p0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold), p0336 (crankshaft position sensor "a" circuit range/performance.
