Read P0335 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0335 is the crankshaft position sensor circuit - the signal every spark and injection event is timed from. No signal, no engine: this is one of the few sensors whose failure stops the car outright.

The classic failure mode is thermal: runs fine cold, stalls hot, restarts after cooling. That pattern plus this code is close to a definitive diagnosis. Given stalling risk, this code belongs in the fix-now category even when symptoms are still occasional.

Repair options and cost

I just purchased my nissan not even 3 months ago and I've had to have it in the 4-5 shops because nobody could figure out why it was giving the code p0335. Finally found out it's the timing chain. Vehicle randomly stalls, reverse and drive. It will stall in traffic, while driving and backing out of the driveway. I had a p0335 code after it stalled about 10 time. The 2017 dodge journey stalls intermittently at all speeds and driving conditions. Stop and go in traffic, accelerating on the highway, coasting up a hill, starting from a stop in an intersection. Usually no codes are thrown. Recently the p0335 code was thrown, crankshaft speed sensor was replaced. Did not fix the problem. The 2016 journey's were recalled for the same issue. Are the 2017's not worthy of a recall or does someone have to die first?2017 Dodge Journey · Aug 2019 · 29,500 mi
So I made a complaint about the same issue but today I have an actual engine code that was pulled up after being rear-ended due to the stalling. It's code p0335 and it's the crankshaft position sensor which is already recalled for the exact make and model in the 2016 version and needs to be recalled immediately for 2015 because if there are any complaints of stalls it's because of this issue. Until this issue is addressed to me and my kid and anyone else who has this problem and car is at risk2015 Jeep Patriot · Jul 2019 · 47,900 mi
