What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0217 is not a sensor complaint - it is the computer stating that coolant temperature has actually exceeded the safe limit. Unlike almost every other code on this site, the right response is to stop driving, let the engine cool, and only then investigate.
Minutes matter with overheating: aluminum heads warp, gaskets burn, and a hundred-dollar hose failure becomes a four-figure repair through fifteen minutes of pressing on. After cooling, check the coolant level first - low coolant plus this code is a leak hunt, full coolant plus this code points at the thermostat, the fan or the water pump. If the overflow tank bubbles or the oil looks like coffee with milk, stop guessing and have it towed: those are head gasket signs.
