P0017 on Kia vehicles

31 owner complaints filed with NHTSA about Kia vehicles mention P0017 (Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor B) - across 7 models. Below is where it shows up, by model and year.

Can you drive with it? Drive gently to a shop - correlation faults can precede timing chain failure.

Symptoms, likely causes in order and realistic repair costs are on the main P0017 page - they do not differ much by brand. This page shows what is specific to Kia: which models and years actually report it.

Kia models reporting P0017

The number next to each year is how many NHTSA complaints for that car mention P0017. Owners rarely quote trouble codes when complaining, so real occurrence is many times higher - use these numbers to compare years, not as totals.

What Kia owners report

“My 2021 Kia Seltos stalled twice while driving and failed to restart, creating a severe safety hazard. The vehicle was previously inspected twice at a Kia dealer for the Piston Ring Recall (SC209). The dealer diagnosis now shows timing failure codes P0014 and P0017 with misfires. The technician notes that the engine oil is entirely 'metalized' and the oil control valves are contaminated with metal debris. Kia is attempting to charge me $7,182 to fix a failure caused by the exact oil starvation symptoms of their active federal safety defect.”2021 Kia Seltos · Aug 2026
“On June 15, 2026, my check engine light came on. On June 17, 2026, I took it to Auto Zone, they checked the code for the check engine light, and it indicated P0016 and P0017–crankshaft issues. On June 19, 2026, while driving down the highway, my vehicle failed to accelerate. I exited the highway, and my vehicle completely decelerated and ultimately shut down. I was unable to get my engine running and had to get it towed to the dealer. It has been at the dealer for 3 weeks now. The dealer said my engine will likely need to be replaced. It is a 2023 Kia Telluride with less than 66,000 miles on it.”2023 Kia Telluride · Jun 2026
“Engine stalled at stoplight. Was able to restart and pulled into closest parking lot where it began idling hard. Check Engine light turned on. Checked oil and it was bone dry (no signs of oil leak/burning beforehand). After adding about a quart of oil, while in park I revved the engine slowly, but it would stall out if it went over 3000 rpms and idle even harder. My basic code reader popped for P0014 and P0017 (crankshaft/camshaft position). Had to have it towed to the local dealer for safety. 75,400 miles on it and my VIN has not been part of recalls. Requesting an investigation to include more VINs as these issues point to a prior recall resulting in engine replacement.”2021 Kia Seltos · Mar 2026
“On [XXX], check engine light came on with P1327 (PNSS piston noise detection). History includes SC209 recall in 2021 (inspection passed, PNSS software added Feb 2022). Now at 94,000 miles with misfire P0304 on cyl 4 and timing correlation P0017-dealer refuses full engine replacement under recall. Service dealer insisted it would be safe to drive 300 miles to Billings, MT from my home base location. Got 5 miles down the road to be left stranded to walk back with no service on a 13 degree day.
