When the vehicle was turned off and restarted, it operated normally. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. A new transmission was ordered. The vehicle was not repaired. “On may 26, 2016 while traveling about 50 mph going up a straight stretch of highway I heard loud banging coming from the engine compartment, then quiet for a second then more loud clanging. I immediately released the accelerator. My battery light immediately came on. I stepped on my brake but had to step hard to get it to slow my car. I approached a curve and had to really muscle the car around the curve. Luckily I was able to just roll into a resort parking lot. My belt was laying under the car but still intact. My mechanic said the water pump came apart and took the pulley with it, causing the belt to fall to the ground.”Owner report · Engine · May 2016

The contact stated that the brakes failed to work several times and the failure progressed intermittently. Due to the failure, the contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained injuries to the head, neck, back, bruising on the left knee, and a black left eye. Medical attention was received and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. “The dashboard that holds in the passenger airbag has come unglued from the frame on the dashboard. Also the side view mirrors are not very stable and have been shaking and the passenger side view mirror has just broke off from driving and turning onto other roads that have slight dip. MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING 45,988 MY 2005-2007 ENDEAVOR, GALANT, ECLIPSE COUPE, AND MY 2007 ECLIPSE SPYDER VEHICLES. THE BRACKET THAT IS THE ATTACHMENT POINT FOR THE LEFT REAR FUEL TANK MOUNTING STRAP MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY FORMED DURING A METAL STAMPING PROCESS. THE PROCESS MAY HAVE CAUSED THE METAL TO HAVE A SPLIT IN THE AREA WHERE THE BOLT THAT HOLDS ONE OF THE TWO FUEL TANK STRAPS TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE IS LOCATED. IN THE EVENT THE FUEL TANK IS FULL AND THE VEHICLE IS SUBJECT TO A SEVERE COLLISION, THE BRACKET MAY BREAK AND ALLOW THE FUEL TANK TO DROP DOWN, POSSIBLY CAUSING A FUEL LEAK.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT TO SEE IF THE LEFT REAR FUEL TANK STRAP MOUNTING BRACKET HAS SPLITTING BEYOND A SPECIFIC LIMIT. VEHICLES WITH MODERATE TO SEVERE SPLITTING WILL BE REPAIRED USING A REINFORCEMENT CAP, A SPECIAL STRUCTURAL ADHESIVE, AND A RIVET TO REINFORCE THE FUEL TANK MOUNTING BRACKET. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.
