P2440: AIR System Switching Valve Stuck Open Bank 1

A generic powertrain (engine and transmission) trouble code, same meaning on every brand.

Fix at convenience

Yes - though some designs respond with reduced power mode. The urgency is emissions tests and the risk of moisture spreading through the air injection system.

Symptoms

  • Loud air pump noise at cold start lasting too long
  • Check engine light
  • Reduced power mode on some trucks
  • Failed emissions test

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Secondary air switching valve stuck open by moisture and corrosion
  2. Air pump passing water into the valves
  3. Carbon jamming the valve
  4. Valve driver or vacuum control fault

Read P2440 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P2440 concerns the secondary air injection system - a pump and valves that blow fresh air into the exhaust for the first minute after a cold start, helping the catalytic converters light off sooner. The bank 1 switching valve is supposed to open for that minute and then seal shut; this code says it is stuck open, leaving the exhaust connected to the air plumbing all the time.

The engineering flaw that made this code famous, particularly on a generation of V8 trucks and SUVs, is condensation: exhaust moisture migrates back through the stuck valve into the pump, corroding both. That is why the honest repair often pairs the valve with the pump - replace only the valve into a rusty system and the new part inherits the old moisture. Aftermarket bypass kits exist and are widely discussed; they disable an emissions system, which fails inspections and is not a repair. Checking for manufacturer goodwill coverage on these components, which existed for some model years, costs one phone call.

Repair options and cost

Switching valve replacement$300 - $800
Air pump and valve kit$800 - $1,800
Control circuit diagnosis$100 - $200

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

Got 2 codes on secondary air system p2440,p0410. Witch restricted me from passing safety inspection and have a check engine light. It seems to be an on going common problem.2013 Subaru Impreza · Dec 2021
Code p2440 can dairy air injection system switching valve stuck open bank 1. Vehicle has 71,000 miles on it been informed that this is a common issue with this year make and model and the toyota should've issued a recall. On my 2012 tacoma the code p2440 and p2442 which represent a stuck open valve in the secondary air injection system. Upon my research into this issue on forums I have learned this is a common problem with the toyota systems particularly the 2012 tacoma. The cost of the part is about 400 to 500 dollars for the valves and another 500 dollars for the secondary air injection pump. The failure will place the vehicle into a limp mode and has to be fixed in order to the truck to keep on good working condition. It seems like this error has affected many tacoma owners. *tr2012 Toyota Tacoma · Apr 2020 · 103,000 mi

Failure of the secondary air injection system p2440 and p2442, while the vehicle was moving onto a city street from a parking lot. When accelerating immediately there was a decrease in power and the check engine light along with the "trac off" light illuminating simultaneously. The vehicle has a now maximum speed of around 55 mph and extremely slow to accelerate being almost dangerous on busier roads. After being check out by a the dealer it was found to be the secondary air injection system which is covered by an extended warranty but parts are on back-order.2012 Toyota Tacoma · Dec 2019 · 91,500 mi
During normal driving, the check engine light and traction control off light came on and truck immediately went in to limp-home mode. I had it scanned for codes at the local auto parts store and it came back with p2440 and p2442 which seems like a common issue with a valve in the secondary air injection system. I quick google search showed that some 2012 tacoma owners are getting this covered under a special warranty extension, so I puttered over to the toyota dealership expecting to hear the same story, but they are telling me the ecm computer is bad. Which I am trying to get clarification on since I can't find any ecm failure issues for this make and model year.2012 Toyota Tacoma · Apr 2019 · 144,000 mi
Having trouble with my vehicles secondary air injection system, replacement parts are super expensive and have seen many people have the same issue, seems like a non-reliable component. Always get the fault codes p2440 and p2442. I strongly beleive that this is a defective component.2012 Toyota Tacoma · Feb 2019
Truck turns over, but not start without starter fluid (spark confirmed, no fuel). P2440 code displayed; cleared by scanner and code has not returned but problem persists. Once started with starter fluid, truck runs and drives normally, confirming no issues with fuel system. Problem usually re-occurs only on cold (left overnight) starts, but occasionally re-occurs even with a warm engine (I.e., stopped for gas).2013 Toyota Tacoma · Feb 2019 · 47,000 mi
Toyota has a known issue of the secondary air injection switching valve that is faulty that causes the 2012 tacoma to go into "limp mode" expectantly. I was getting on the freeway and the truck cut out down to 25 mph while traffic was rapidly approaching almost causing an accident. The engine codes shown are the typical p2440 and p2442 and has been reported numerous times. Please prompt toyota to recall this part to avoid unfortunate accidents or death due to a known issue.2012 Toyota Tacoma · Dec 2018 · 96,573 mi
