What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P2440 concerns the secondary air injection system - a pump and valves that blow fresh air into the exhaust for the first minute after a cold start, helping the catalytic converters light off sooner. The bank 1 switching valve is supposed to open for that minute and then seal shut; this code says it is stuck open, leaving the exhaust connected to the air plumbing all the time.
The engineering flaw that made this code famous, particularly on a generation of V8 trucks and SUVs, is condensation: exhaust moisture migrates back through the stuck valve into the pump, corroding both. That is why the honest repair often pairs the valve with the pump - replace only the valve into a rusty system and the new part inherits the old moisture.
