P0725: Engine Speed Input Circuit
A generic powertrain (engine and transmission) trouble code, same meaning on every brand.
Yes - shift quality suffers but the data has redundancy.
Symptoms
- Slightly harsh or mistimed shifts
- Converter lockup behaving oddly
Likely causes, most common first
- Engine speed signal not reaching the transmission computer
- Wiring between modules
- Network communication fault
Read P0725 yourself before paying for diagnosis
A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.
What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0725 means the transmission computer is not receiving a valid engine rpm signal. On modern cars this data travels the network from the engine module, making this a communication symptom rather than a dedicated-sensor fault.
The transmission can shift acceptably on remaining data, which keeps urgency moderate - but network faults deserve diagnosis before they collect friends.
Repair options and cost
Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

“Car stalling while in motion due to crank shaft sensor defect, also car is not shifting properly due to speed input sensor defect. Service engine light is on, codes given during diagnostics are p0335 and p0725.”2005 Nissan Altima · Aug 2017 · 2 mi
“After a 30 minutes to 1 hour drive on a highway, the vehicle drops in speed when driving uphill. Vehicle speed decreases and stays no more than 35 mph; resulting in an unsafe, hazardous condition. Nissan diagnosis found to be a transmission problem and needs to replace it, p0725 and u1000, however cvt warranty extension has expired.”2010 Nissan Rogue · Sep 2015 · 45,000 mi
“While driving ~25 mph I was slowing down to a red traffic light and my car spontaneously shut off in traffic! I was able to put my car in park and restart the car. A few days later, it took 3 attempts before my engine started. After a diagnostic, the car displayed codes p0335 (crankshaft position sensor) and p0725 (engine speed circuit signal sensor). After doing much research I found hundreds of complaints online with similar issues! I input my VIN# to see if my vehicle was under recall and it wasn't. After seeing hundreds of the same complaints, why hasn't their been a recall? If there was, how is it possible that my car wasn't recalled?”2006 Nissan Altima · Jun 2015 · 111,590 mi

“'service engine soon' lite came on. Dealer scanned for trouble codes p0725,p0335. Was told the "crankshaft position sensor" needs replacing, and was charged $130. The dealer wants to charge me $425 to replace 'cps'. Was told that there was no recall for this situation. Found out later thru the internet that there were 600 incidents concerning 'cps'. The dealer should fix this with no charge. NHTSA #07v527000 recall explains the problem. Also see recall id #67654 from nissan. *tr”2006 Nissan Altima · Dec 2012 · 45,000 mi
