Symptoms

  • Code returns immediately after clearing
  • Random limp modes or stalling
  • Sometimes no symptoms at all

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Engine computer internal memory checksum failure
  2. Voltage events corrupting memory (jump starts, welding)
  3. Genuine module failure

Read P0601 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0601 means the engine computer failed its own memory self-check. Occasionally a reflash genuinely cures it - corruption without hardware damage happens after voltage events like careless jump-starts.

If the code returns after a clean reflash with verified power and grounds, the module's memory is failing physically, and replacement with programming is the honest path.

Repair options and cost

Reflash attempt$100 - $300
PCM replacement + programming$800 - $2,000

Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.

My pontiac has had a leak for 6 yrs basically since I had it and before that. I didn't think nothing of this but after a while of the sunroof leak it causes corrosion on the electrical terminals in the wire harness inside the dash on driver door side. This corrosion cause your car to throw pcm/tac codes : p0601,p0606,o0107. Causes car to complete stall out and go into reduced engine power mode. This can be extremely unsafe. I am not the only one there is a few hundred people who posted on sites trying to fix the same issue. Please look into this a lot of people don't know about this NHTSA to report recalls.2005 Pontiac G6 · Mar 2020 · 185,000 mi
This 2001 dodge dakota comes up with code p0601 it says it is a memory check sum error. It comes on intermittent in cold weather. If you clear the code it might come right back or it might stay off it is annoying sometimes it messes with the ABS making the front right brake hang up2002 Dodge Dakota · Jan 2020 · 2,123,432 mi
Engine died on highway lost all power and no steering. Was told by dealer it was a bad neg battery cable. It is shocking that a bad battery cable can cause a deadly situation. Certainly someone will die from this defect if they havent already. Dealer claimed to repair the vehicle and it happened only a few miles after I picked up the vehicle. Error code was p0601. They have the car for repair again, but I refuse to every drive the death trap. I have had 20 suburbans and I hope this is an isolated defect not one that affects all suburbans. This defect is extremely dangerous. Someone will certainly die from this defect.2013 Chevrolet Suburban · Sep 2017 · 44,000 mi

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 hummer h3. While driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle shut down, locked up, and did not restart. The check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle restarted later and was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose or duplicate the failure. The vehicle was taken to another dealer where the following codes were run for the check engine warning: c0240, p0106, p0601. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.2006 Hummer H3 · May 2017 · 130,000 mi
Engine starts and runs, but as soon as I put it into any gear but park, the car immediately dies. It will restart, but again dies when placed in a gear. The check engine light came on so I had my mechanic look at it. He checked for codes and this is the code that came up (p0601). It has 83500 miles. He says it need a new computer. This initially started backing into traffic, the car just quit. I started it back up and went to put it in drive and it again quit. This happens over and over, until someone pushed me out of the street. Car is now parked until it is repaired.2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser · Jun 2016 · 83,500 mi
While driving the vehicle at 30 mph, I got a check engine light. The vehicle transmission would not shift to the next higher gear during acceleration. Note: this was also evident by an increase of engine rpm's on the tachometer. This vehicle was purchased new by myself in 2001. It has only 17,508 miles on it!. Checking of the engine fault light revealed a p0601 trouble codei. This is an internal fault in the powertrain control module (pcm). I have seen similar problems noted by other 2001 chrysler 300 m owners, upon conducting a search on the computer. Since this appears to be a common problem for this vehicle, I would like to know why there have not been any recalls! *tr2001 Chrysler 300M · Aug 2014 · 17,508 mi
This is a follow-up to odi confirmation number: 10610590 where the vehicle would completely shut off without warning. All powered functions were lost. The display screen would signal: "engine disabled." per the chevy dealer, the problem has been identified as a improper working pcm (powertrain control module), where the following error codes were present: p0601 to p0606 and u2109. Estimated cost to repair, at this point, is $740.00 + tax. For peace of mind and of course, reasons of personal safety, we hope that this is the problem. *js2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx · Jul 2014 · 82,850 mi
While sitting at a stop light the information panel said reduced engine power as the light turned green. I held up numerous cars as I scanned the obd2 port to clear the code, once again the code read p0601. Cleared it and it started right up. *js2009 Chevrolet Impala · Aug 2013 · 111,700 mi
On my commute to work on the interstate my impala shut itself off. I was in the left lane when the car showed the reduced engine power on the information panel, it then fully disengaged all engine power and powersteering. Being in the outside lane I had to maneuver my impala through the heavy traffic and almost caused numerous accidents trying to squeeze to the shoulder. I then coasted off into the grass almost into a large ditch but I slammed on the brakes hard and went into a skid coming to a full stop. I scanned the car with my obd2 scanner, it read p0601. *js2009 Chevrolet Impala · Aug 2013 · 111,450 mi
2005 chevrolet colorado 102,000 miles. Vehicle flashes "reduced power" on information display then shuts down engine. Luckily I was able to coast in to a parking lot out of traffic. Engine refuses to start for a couple of minutes then fires up. Has done this a number of times since. Engine code given is p0601 "check sum error", ie computer glitch. This is an unsafe condition, instead of reducing the engine so that one might get out of thraffic, the fact that it kills the engine is a major safeyt risk. Poor programming to say the least.2005 Chevrolet Colorado · Aug 2013 · 102,000 mi
