Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Stronger exhaust smell when cold
  • Emissions test failure

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Passages to bank 1 blocked with carbon
  2. Check valve on that bank leaking or stuck
  3. Hose split or disconnected
  4. Weak pump

Read P0491 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0491 says measured airflow into bank 1's exhaust is too low, while the system as a whole is trying to work. On V engines with a single pump feeding both banks, one starved bank almost always means a blockage or leak on that bank's branch - the shared pump would fail both banks at once.

That logic is the whole diagnosis: one bank low means look between the split point and that bank (hose, check valve, drilled passages); both banks low means look at the pump and its supply. Read this code together with its bank 2 sibling before touching anything.

Engine speed (rpm) intermittently increases, or fails to decrease when throttle is released. Progressively worsenening. Last night, stuck at interstate speed and kept engine at high rpm. Wife semi panicked hit brakes and pulled off on shoulder. After 2 hour wait, still sticky, but driveable. Many identical reports/fixes on utube.
