P0128: Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)
A generic powertrain (engine and transmission) trouble code, same meaning on every brand.
Yes, safely. Fuel economy and heater performance suffer until fixed - and in most states it fails emissions readiness.
Symptoms
- Engine temperature gauge reads low or slow to rise
- Weak cabin heat in winter
- Check engine light, worse fuel economy
Likely causes, most common first
- Thermostat stuck open (the cause in the great majority of cases)
- Coolant temperature sensor drifting
- Severely low coolant level
Read P0128 yourself before paying for diagnosis
A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.
What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0128 sets when the engine fails to reach normal operating temperature in the expected time - the computer expects roughly 80-105°C within a few minutes of driving and never sees it. A thermostat stuck open lets coolant circulate through the radiator constantly, overcooling the engine.
This is one of the most predictable codes in the OBD system: replace the thermostat, and it is almost always cured. Delaying costs money quietly - a cold-running engine runs rich, wearing the converter and burning extra fuel all winter.
Repair options and cost
Typical US independent-shop ranges, parts and labor. Dealers run higher; regional labor rates vary.
