A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0441 means EVAP purge flow is wrong - the system that periodically feeds stored fuel vapors into the engine is flowing when it should not, or not flowing when it should. A stuck-open purge valve is the classic culprit and explains the after-refueling stumble some owners notice.

The valve is usually a top-of-engine part replaced in minutes, one of the cheaper check-engine-light cures.

Repair options and cost

Purge valve$100 - $300
Hose cleaning or replacement$60 - $200

ABS, Brake, and Traction Control light came up had dealer review these and got error code C1391 and P0441. Initially they said its covered by Toyota customer service program which covered upto 150k miles as my vehicle only has 98k miles. Later they said only 10 years from the vehicle service which ended in 2023 and quoted $4500 to fix. Previously i asked them to check before expiration since it was not showing consistent light on they could not fix it. Reading through several forums it seems like consistent issue should have been included in recall not customer support program.2013 Toyota Prius · Mar 2025

I have owned the car for 58 months and now there is "Emissions System Error" which is related to canister purge valve malfunction (P0441). This consumes more fuel and failing emissions standards.2018 Honda CR-V · Oct 2023
The MIL comes on with DTCs P0441 (EVAP System Purge Flow Malfunction) P04F1 (EVAP System Low Purge Flow. Detected). I replaced the purge flow valve and joint purge valve which resolved the issue. The reason I am writing is, the coding within the 2019 Pilot also threw an AWD System Problem MIL, but did not have a specific code associated via the OBD reader. It is a false reading that can cause more work to be done to the car than necessary. Once both purge valves were replaced, there are no MIL's present.2019 Honda Pilot · Sep 2023

Now my engine light is on for P0441 code with power train possible evap leak. It just keeps being one problem after another like it's not wanting to get gas to it what seems like. It's all happened over last year and engine light came on Sat2016 Jeep Cherokee · Apr 2023
Air conditioner stopped working in July 2021. Sent to dealer to check as car was under warranty. Dealer performed system diagnostic test. Performed all DTC check: Found code P0441, P04F1 Evap System Purge Flow Malfunction. Performed DTC troubleshooting. Visual inspect purge hoses. No damage. Check evaporation hose no block inside. Holding vacuum. Due to gas tank full. Recommended replace purge valve and recheck. When completed air conditioner worked. Less than a year later air conditioner stopped working again. Same dealer states now is air coolant replacement issue and would cost $475.00 to repair.2018 Honda CR-V · Jul 2022

I turned my car on after work and saw my check engine light turn on I went to autozone to have it checked and they gave me a paper stating it was P0441 engine code. Which has something to do with an incorrect purge flow and is harmful to you and eats away at your gas mileage. Don't know if this is a safety issue.2015 Hyundai Veloster · Jan 2022
Vehicle was diagnosed by mechanic to have malfunctioning canister purge valve that is stuck in an open position, identical to current recall #18v735000 for certain 2012-2018 ford focus vehicles with a 2.0l gdi or 2.0l gtdi engine. My vehicle stalls after I refuel for about a minute; I have to repeatedly start and stop my engine until it stays on, and the engine rumbles excessively for a couple minutes after being able to drive after refueling. The check engine light is on for code #p0441.2016 Ford Focus · Dec 2020
