Symptoms

  • Check engine light only in most cases

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Rear O2 sensor shorted internally
  2. Wiring chafe to a voltage source
  3. Genuinely rich exhaust reaching the rear sensor

Read P0138 yourself before paying for diagnosis

A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.

What is going on and how it gets diagnosed

P0138 is high voltage from the same rear sensor - either an electrical fault or truly rich exhaust making it past the converter. If rich-running codes accompany it, chase those first; the rear sensor may be the only honest witness.

Alone, it is routinely just the sensor. They live in a brutal environment and a decade of service is a full career.

Repair options and cost

Downstream O2 sensor$150 - $400
