What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
P0089 is a performance code: the regulator is responding, but not accurately enough to hold pressure where it is commanded. It often appears before the harder faults around it and is worth treating as an early warning.
On direct injection petrol engines, a worn high pressure pump camshaft lobe is a recognised cause and one that inspection can confirm directly. On diesels, injector return flow testing shows whether worn injectors are bleeding away the pressure the pump is making - a cheap test that decides between a pump job and an injector job.

“I bought this car 1 1/2 yr ago.. Thursday I was driving down the road no warning lights no sounds, it stalled.. I got it home by a friend towing it, and when I went to try to start it, I then had the check engine light come on, and it threw 3 codes.. P0017, P0089, P228D. I was told that the ecm was replaced but after researching this there has been multiple sites stating others are having same issue.. and some stating that their problem was fixed but it broke down again every time. “Vehicle stalled when driven or stopped at traffic light. Abnormal noises coming from engine. When engine oil was checked, no visible oil was available in the dipstick. Inserted dipstick a couple of times to ensure correct measurement. Extremely low oil left in vehicle. Vehicle seems to be burning oil. Diagnostic trouble codes read by obd2 tool were: p0011,p0191,p228d,p0089 and p0014. When investigating online, this is a common problem with the vehicle's engine. “This vehicle is owned by the City of Fort Lauderdale Police Department. We are submitting complaints for multiple Tahoe's that have stopped during operation causing extreme danger to our staff and other drivers in the city.
