C0020: ABS Pump Motor Control
A generic chassis trouble code, same meaning on every brand.
With ABS simply offline (light on, brakes feel normal): yes, carefully - base brakes work, you have just lost the anti-lock safety net. But if ABS activates on its own at low speed or the pedal buzzes on gentle stops, stopping distance is affected - that version is a repair-now problem, not a someday one.
Symptoms
- ABS warning light
- ABS pump running at odd times or not at all
- Occasional unwanted ABS activation at low speed
- Blown ABS fuse in short-circuit cases
Likely causes, most common first
- ABS pump motor worn out
- Corroded power or ground connection for the pump
- Failed relay or driver inside the ABS module
- Water intrusion into the module connector
Read C0020 yourself before paying for diagnosis
A basic Bluetooth OBD-II scanner ($20-40) plugs into the port under the dashboard and shows this code with live sensor data on your phone - useful both for confirming the fix and for talking to a shop from an informed position.
What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
C0020 flags a fault in the ABS pump motor circuit - the electric motor that builds the pressure ABS uses to pulse your brakes. The module tests it at every startup (the brief whir some drivers notice pulling away), and a motor that draws too much current, too little, or none at all sets this code and usually retires ABS until it passes again.
The pump motor draws serious current, which makes its supply the first suspect: a corroded ground strap or a green battery-feed terminal mimics a dead motor perfectly and costs nothing but cleaning. Only after power and ground measure healthy does the motor itself take the blame - and on many trucks the motor can be replaced separately from the valve module, which is worth insisting on, because module-level rebuild services also exist at a fraction of the dealer's assembly price. Given that this is braking hardware, work beyond the cleaning stage belongs with someone equipped to bleed and retest ABS properly.

“I am in Virginia and received a recall code C0020-01 for general abs fault. The truck continues to beep alerting me of this fact. I need replacement of the hcu. Which i have been told controls the breaking hydraulics. To me this seems to be of concern and could easily cause an accident and injury. This has been occurring since August of 2025 and I have been in contact with the dealership, Blackwell of Danville, VA, since then. On 11/1/25 I went into the dealership for other issues but this problem as well. They told me there is no part available for replacement and hasn't been for over a year. Well we are in a new year so how much longer do I need to wait for my truck to be safe?”2018 Ram 2500 · Aug 2025

“Hello, I have an Anti Lock Brakes electrical motor failure on my vehicle. The motor failed once at 20000 miles and failed again after a warranty replacement at 60000 miles. The part is on national back order for 2 years now and keeps the ABS from being fully engaged. It also disables cruise control and constantly dings. Two Dodge dealerships have confirmed the issue. The code is C0020-01”2018 Ram 2500 · Oct 2024
“ABS control module is out, code c0020-01 I know 3 other people with the same issue. It is a widespread problem with these rams. Especially in the 2017-2018 years. How can there be a widespread issue like this and there not be a safety recall, seems like an issue with the brake system would be recalled quickly.”2018 Ram 2500 · Oct 2024
