What is going on and how it gets diagnosed
B0001 flags a fault in the circuit that fires the driver's frontal airbag first stage. The airbag computer measures the resistance of this loop constantly; anything outside the narrow window - open, short, high resistance - sets the code and, on most cars, disables the system while the light is on. That last part is the point people miss: the light does not mean 'an airbag might not work', it usually means 'the airbags are off right now'.
The classic culprit sits behind the steering wheel: the clock spring, a wound ribbon cable that lets the wheel turn while keeping the airbag connected. It wears out with steering itself, and horn buttons or wheel controls dying together with the airbag light is its signature. Airbag circuits are one of the few places where amateur probing is genuinely dangerous - an accidental deployment injures hands and faces - so measurement belongs to a shop with the right tools and the disarm procedure.
